A richly detailed barley twist armchair featuring hand-painted leather upholstery with floral motifs, accented by classic nailhead trim. Originally a formal seating chair used in dining rooms, great halls or sitting rooms, libraries or studies. The arms and sturdy structure made it more important than a simple side chair, typically reserved for the head of household or a distinguished guest. In the 17th century most people sat on stools or benches and a carved, upholstered armchair was a symbol of status that signaled wealth, authority, and comfort (a luxury at the time). This chair was built for warmth and durability. The leather seat and back were practical, easy to clean, long lasting, and warmer than bare wood. The deep seat and arms made it comfortable for long periods to allow for reading, hosting, or conversation by the fire. Inspired by 17th-century Jacobean design, this piece offers warmth, texture, and old-world character. Perfect as a character rich accent chair that brings warmth and history to any corner of the home.
