Antique Giltwood Fragment

  • antique circa 1880
  • found in Paris, France
  • baroque revival style
  • made of giltwood
  • 4" tall x 3.5" wide

A beautifully sculptural giltwood architectural finial, hand-carved in the Baroque Revival tradition of France. A richly modeled form surmounted by a fluted dome and ball finial, this decorative element was originally created as part of a larger piece of furniture or architectural ornamentation such as a grand four-poster or canopy bed. The form is characteristic of the decorative turnings and carved embellishments found on European bedsteads of the late nineteenth century. Similar examples were also used to adorn large mirrors, armoires, and other statement furnishings where carved ornament added visual richness and grandeur. Retaining traces of its original gilded surface with naturally worn areas exposing the underlying gesso, the piece possesses the authentic patina and character that only age can provide. A charming example of European decorative craftsmanship, equally appealing for its sculptural form and its connection to the grand interiors from which it once originated.

Today, it serves beautifully as a decorative object in its own right—styled atop books, displayed within a cabinet, or incorporated into a collection of architectural fragments and antique curiosities.
